I once had that problem on an older Mac with Kingston flash drives. Perhaps the ones you have just won't work.

I wish I had more for you, but I don't know what more to suggest except different flash drive makes. Then go through the process of erasing the drive and installing El Capitan from a fresh download from Apple (in case the problem lies in the copy you now have.) Once accomplished then try making the flash drive. You would need to start with backing up the computer, if needed. You might prefer trying this with the computer you have the least immediate need for since this is time consuming. It is possible that the failure is related in some way to your current system. One suggestion is that you reinstall El Capitan on your computer, preferably from scratch, then try creating a bootable flash drive. I'm reasonably sure that it is something not only simple but also Stupid, but I can't figure it out. Both have been formatted with the Disk Utility as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Partition Map Scheme of GUID Partition Table.įurther, I've even tried "Diskmaker X 5". This is a repeatable situation either on a USB Flash Drive (16GB) or a USB Disk (500GB). I'm basing that on 2 tests: 1) System Preferences, Startup Disk does NOT see it and 2) Immediately press and hold the Option key. Neither of these scripts produce something that is bootable.

Sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia -volume /Volumes/ElCapInstaller -applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app -nointeraction Sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia -volume /Volumes/Untitled -applicationpath "/Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app" I have tried various forms of this script several times on my iMac (3.1 MHZ ~ Late 2012) and my MacBookPro. I want to use it both in Parallels or wiping and loading a MacBookPro.
